Here Comes the Rooster: Ryan Travis Christian’s exhibition opens in Hong Kong

OVER the Influence presents Here Comes the Rooster: Ryan Travis Christian’s first solo exhibition in Asia. The American artist, famed for his comic exposure of a corrupt modern world, will exhibit a new series of his signature charcoal on paper drawings, alongside canvas paintings; a medium previously unexhibited by Christian.

Christian’s works are inspired by vintage political cartoons and early hand-drawn animation, a style rooted in popular entertainment and huge financial success. He harnesses this connotations in order to satirise contemporary society.

His bold, sketchy style tinges pop-like commercial imagery with biting political satire: sweeping charcoal lines suggest the chaos of societal instability. His pieces conjure a dystopian cartoon world, at once buoyantly humorous, and deeply ominous.
