Over the Influence presents Meta Universe by Hongmin Lee

THE Korean artist Hongmin Lee will exhibit his first solo show, Meta Universe, at Over the Influence gallery this Spring. Based in Seoul, the artist will present a series of paintings produced between 2019 and 2021, providing an overview of the shift of Lee’s perspective over the past three years.

The paintings are emotive: their animation-style figures are at once familiar and foreboding. ”I believe the human body is an assembly of will, and I try to express it with twisted muscles,“ Lee says of the central figure traced through this body of work.

Its metamorphosis, and bodily contortions conjure the shifting emotions and themes of despair, determination and coming of age which Lee seeks to explore.

There is a tension in the pieces between the 2-dimensional planes of anime-style figures, and the anatomical dissection of snuggling bodies, rendered in near-grotesque 3-D.
