AFTER being noticeably absent from the runway these past two seasons, Fashion Month mainstay Marc Jacobs made a comeback like no other with an uplifting AW21 catwalk at New York’s Public Library.
Dropping the slinky minimalism and colour blocking of AW20 shown back in February last year, this season, 60s-tinged silhouettes and bolder-the-better monogramming was the order of the day.
Modelled by the likes of Kaia Gerber and Gigi Hadid, sweeping, wide-leg trousers and voluminous cocoon coats stamped with a neon-hued version of the Marc Jacobs logo were worn over stretchy roll necks and sequin disc-embellished midi skirts, while geometric-print slips came accessorised with puffer hoods and snoods and lengthy faux fur scarves that swept the floor in dramatic fashion.
The special runway show also debuted a brand-new partnership with New York-based luxury retailer Bergdorf Goodman, with the show broadcasted live on the façade of their iconic fifth avenue store.
“As a born and raised New Yorker, Bergdorf Goodman has always been and continues to be a beacon of aspiration, service and quality,” said Jacobs. “From my early memories as a child of their ingenious, fantastical and bold window displays to their steadfast commitment to the Marc Jacobs collections (which began in the mid-1990s, following my exit from Perry Ellis), I have long revered the Bergdorf Goodman name as a pinnacle of the ultimate retail experience.”
Re-establishing New York’s position at the forefront of the Fashion Month calendar, this season – aptly named Happiness – brought joy in abundance, both with its fantastical garments and the return of one of fashion’s most cherished designers.
